Gambling and Its Benefits to SocietyFor many years since the introduction of casinos, gambling has been looked upon by some sectors of society as an evil enterprise. Though it cannot be denied that gambling, especially if it is uncontrolled and taken to the extreme, has negative consequences to individuals and society as a whole, it has many positive benefits that are not easily discernable to most people. Land-based and online casinos have long been one of the world's top employers in terms of the number of jobs directly and indirectly created through the gambling industry. Land-based casinos like those in Las Vegas and Atlantic City hire thousands of employees each year, including card dealers, entertainers, slot machine operators, security personnel, managers and other professionals. This is not to mention the countless employees indirectly benefiting from the gambling boom, including construction workers, engineers, technicians, cooks, hotel staff and many more. Online casinos also have their share of employment benefits, with thousands of computer programmers and technicians hired to create and maintain online casino websites and software programs. In places where casinos have become a major industry, like in Nevada, gambling has fueled an economic and industrial boom. Many businessmen and entrepreneurs are attracted to the economic potential of casinos, and have established shops, hotels, restaurants and other businesses near the casinos. These businesses, in turn, hire employees to run their establishments and also pay taxes to the government. So it can be said that gambling is now a major player in the global economy and governments were smart enough to realize this. In fact, gambling has become a multibillion dollar industry and gives out millions of dollars each year in the form of taxes, wages and prizes. Even more surprising is the fact that several gambling establishments have contributed to worthy causes like charitable institutions and foundations. Many casinos organize tournaments and TV shows where a large portion of the proceeds go to a charitable institution. While gambling has many positive benefits to society, there are still a few people who decry the supposed negative benefits of gambling on the community. True, there are many cases of gambling addiction, as well as crimes and fraud related to gambling, but these are becoming few and far between. People are beginning to look to gambling as a form of recreation and entertainment, and as an avenue for relaxation and pleasure â€" not as a financially-rewarding enterprise. Those who fall victim to gambling addiction are die-hard gamblers who can't control their habits, and badly need professional help. Gambling should not be looked upon for its supposed negative connotations, but rather for its positive aspects. Gambling has not only provided fun and entertainment to millions of people all over the world, but has also helped improve the lives of people around it. |
